The Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta, one of the largest freshwater inland deltas in the world, was formed as a result of the flow of the Okavango River. It was once part of the Makgadikgadi Lake and is a myriad of water channels, lagoons, floodplains and swamps.
The delta is an oasis in the middle of the arid Kalahari Desert and with no outlet to the sea, it is an astonishingly beautiful place with an unrivalled diversity of wildlife.
Wildlife include antelope, wildebeest, buffalo, and numerous predators such as lions and hyenas as well as array of bird life with eagles and herons in wild abundance. Within the waters themselves are an approximate 35 million fish ranging over 80 species.
Mokoro (canoe) trips are a wonderful way to discover the delta and its natural inhabitants and flights over the delta also offer magnificent views of this labyrinth of waterways. The translucent waters of the delta create a haven in the harsh landscape of the Kalahari and is one of the best wildlife viewing places in Africa.
