Maun
Maun is the gateway to the Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve, and has been described as the tourism capital of Botswana. It is dotted with signs and offices of the myriad of safari and air-charter operators headquartered in Maun.
Established in 1915 as a tribal capital, Maun was always regarded as a rural frontier town catering to the cattle ranchers in the surrounding areas.
Over the ensuing decades Maun spread along the Thamalakane River as tourism industry grew and with a population of over 30,000 people. There are a variety of shopping centres, hotels and lodges in addition to the charter & hire offices and an airport mainly catering to the light aircraft charters into the Delta.
However, there is still a rural feel to Maun and it is not uncommon to see local tribesmen herding cattle into town for sale, donkeys and goats on the roads, of find antelopes grazing the serene river banks of the Thamalakane.
